Coldrex tablet is used to treat headaches, muscle and joint pain, inflamed nasal membranes, sinus pain, dry cough, sore throat, and painful swallowing. It provides short-term relief for flu, fever, cold, and cough.

Ingredients of Coldrex Tablets and Their Uses

Coldrex is a combination of three commonly used medications Paracetamol, Dextromethorphan, and Chlorpheniramine.

  1. Relief of Pain and Fever: Paracetamol is a widely used analgesic (pain reliever) and antipyretic (fever reducer). It helps to alleviate pain, such as headaches, muscle aches, and sore throat and reduces fever commonly associated with colds and flu.
  2. Cough Suppression: Dextromethorphan is a cough suppressant that helps alleviate coughing. It works by acting on the cough reflex in the brain, reducing the urge to cough. It is used to provide temporary relief from dry, non-productive coughs commonly associated with colds and respiratory infections.
  3. Relief of Nasal Congestion and Allergic Symptoms: Chlorpheniramine is an antihistamine with anticholinergic properties. It helps alleviate symptoms of nasal congestion, runny nose, and sneezing caused by allergies or respiratory infections. Chlorpheniramine also helps relieve itching and watery eyes associated with allergic reactions.

How Coldrex Works?

Each component of Coldrex has a distinct mode of action:

  1. Paracetamol (an active ingredient of Coldrex) works by inhibiting the production of certain chemicals in the body that contribute to pain and fever. It blocks the production of prostaglandins, which are involved in the inflammatory response and pain signaling pathways.
  2. Dextromethorphan (another active ingredient of Coldrex) works by suppressing the cough reflex, reducing the urge to cough. It does not directly target the underlying cause of the cough but provides temporary relief from the cough.
  3. Chlorpheniramine (also another active ingredient of Coldrex) blocks the effects of histamine, a chemical released during allergic reactions. By blocking histamine receptors, chlorpheniramine helps to alleviate symptoms of allergies or respiratory infections.
