Cefim Capsule Uses

Cefim capsule is primarily used to treat bacterial infections in the respiratory and urinary tracts. It belongs to the class of antibiotics known as cephalosporins. Following are some common uses of Cefim Capsules:

1. Respiratory Tract Infections: Cefim is often used to treat respiratory tract infections, including acute bronchitis, community-acquired pneumonia, and exacerbations of chronic bronchitis. It is also effective against many common bacteria that cause other respiratory infections including, Sinusitis, Pharyngitis, and Tonsillitis.
2. Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Cefim is frequently used to treat uncomplicated urinary tract infections caused by susceptible bacteria. It can help alleviate symptoms such as frequent urination, burning sensation during urination, and lower abdominal pain.
3. Ear Infections: Cefim is sometimes used for the treatment of certain types of ear infections, particularly acute otitis media (middle ear infection) in children. It is effective against susceptible bacteria commonly associated with ear infections.
4. Gonorrhea: Cefim has been used in the past for the treatment of uncomplicated gonorrhea.

Presently, Cefim is available in Capsule and Suspension Forms with the following strengths.

Cefim Capsules : 200mg and 400mg strengths.

Cefim Syrup : 100mg/5ml strength.

Cefim has several contraindications, which are medical conditions or situations where the use of Cefim is not recommended due to the potential risks outweighing the benefits.

Allergy or hypersensitivity: Cefim should not be used in individuals who have a known allergy or hypersensitivity to Cefim or other cephalosporin antibiotics. A history of severe allergic reactions, such as anaphylaxis, to these medications, is a contraindication.

Severe renal impairment: Cefim is primarily eliminated from the body through the kidneys. Therefore, it is contraindicated in patients with severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance less than 30 mL/min) unless the potential benefits outweigh the risks. In such cases, dosage adjustments may be necessary.

History of cholestatic jaundice or liver dysfunction: Cefim can rarely cause liver-related adverse effects. Therefore, it should be used with caution or avoided in individuals with a history of cholestatic jaundice or other liver dysfunctions associated with Cefim use.

Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea: Cefim, like other antibiotics, can disrupt the natural balance of bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract and lead to the overgrowth of Clostridium difficile bacteria. This can cause severe diarrhea and colitis. If a patient is suspected or confirmed to have this condition, Cefim should be discontinued.

Cefim Dose for Respiratory Tract Infections:

• One Capsule of 400mg once daily or One Capsule of 200mg every 12 hours.

Cefim Dose for Urinary Tract Infections:

• One Capsule of 400mg once daily or One Capsule of 200mg every 12 hours.

Cefim Dose for Gonorrhea:

• One Capsule of 400mg is typically recommended.
• However, it’s important to note that the emergence of antibiotic-resistant strains of gonorrhea has led to changes in treatment guidelines, and other antibiotics may be preferred.

Cefim works by binding to and inhibiting the activity of enzymes called penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which are involved in the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall. By blocking these enzymes, cefixime disrupts the formation of peptidoglycan, an essential component of the bacterial cell wall. By interfering with the bacterial cell wall synthesis, ultimately leading to bacterial cell death.
