When to Take Alfacalcidol?
Diseases involving disturbed calcium metabolism due to reduced endogenous production of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3. Renal osteodystrophy, postoperative or idiopathic hypoparathyroidism, pseudohypoparathyroidism, as an adjunct to the management of tertiary hyperparathyroidism, osteomalacia, vitamin D-dependant rickets, malabsorbtive and nutritional rickets and osteoporosis.
Cadla is contraindicated in patients having Hypercalcemia.
Dosage
Dosage should be adjusted according to biochemical responses to avoid hypercalcaemia
- Adults & children >20kg: 0.5-1 pg-daily
- Children <20kg: 0.05 pg/kg/day
- Most patients usually respond to dosage between 1 to 3 pg daily.
- Higher dosages may be required in patients currently taking barbiturates or other anticonvulsants to attain desired effect.
Dose requirement generally decreases in patients with bone disease when biochemical or radiographic evidence of bone healing and also in patients of hypoparathyroidism after normal serum calcium level has been obtained.
Side Effects
Apart from hypercalcemia, no other side effects have been reported with Cadla.
